The Little Dog Who Could Fly

My first thought when I saw this picture was that he looks like Dumbo- he can fly!!! Then I realized he can. When he runs, his steps are so long that it actually seems as though he's airborne. His longest hike ever was nine miles. Well, nine miles for Captain Hairdo- at least double that for Toby. He would run past me until he was out of sight, then come flying back down the trail past me the other way until he was out of sight, then do it again. Repeat steps 1-3 for nine miles. I've taken him trail running up to seven miles, and snowshoeing for as much as four hours, and I cannot wear him out. After these outings, he's usually more energetic than before. Maybe he'll settle down as he ages, but I hope he never loses his playful, good-natured spirit or his desire to explore with the Captain. Did I mention he loves the beach? Here (below) is a picture of us at San Juan County State Park on San Juan Island. The San Juan archipelago is one of my favorite areas of the world, and as far as I can tell, The Little Dog Who Could Fly digs it too!
